How ’bout them Redskins!

Monday, December 19th, 2005

No, I’m not that big of a fan… but apparently Darrell Armstrong is.

After hearing of the 35-7 dismantling of the Cowboys by the Redskins, the DALLAS Mavericks guard picked up a stadium mic just before a home game against the Timberwolves and yelled, “How ’bout them Redskins!”.

He was then fined $1,000 by Coach Avery Johnson. That money will go to a charity of the Cowboys choosing.

Good times…

Batboy Gallon Challenge

Thursday, August 25th, 2005

Ever heard of the “Gallon Challenge”? Basically someone dares you to drink a gallon of milk within an hour without throwing up. Most people think it’s impossible but I have seen it done. A former co-worker of mine won this bet about a year ago although inside information has led some of us to believe that laxatives may have played a part in the successful completion of the challenge.

Well, apparently MLB players are aware of this challenge as well. Former Marlins pitcher (and current Dodger) Brad Penny recently offered a Florida Marlins batboy $500 to complete the challenge. Not only was the kid not able to finish the milk within the hour, but the Marlins suspended him for 6 games.

Penny sums up the situation pretty well…

“It’s kind of ridiculous that you get a 10-game suspension for steroids and a six-game suspension for milk.”

I totally agree.

D.C. United vs. Chelsea Recap

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

A couple of weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to score tickets to the D.C. United vs. Chelsea exhibition soccer match at FedEx field. The match was billed as a clash of the champions. D.C. United, who won the MLS Cup last year, faced Chelsea, the English Premier League (EPL) champs from 2004.

The EPL is widely regarded as the best soccer league in the world so imagine the New England Patriots heading up to Canada to whoop up on their reigning football champ and that gives you an idea of what D.C. United was facing. No one at FedEx field was expecting D.C. United to come away with a win, but we were all definitely hoping for a competitive game and maybe just a little magic.

From the opening whistle, D.C. United looked good… real good. They took it to the EPL champs and actually had them on their heels for the first 30 minutes of action. Bobby Boswell scored for United in the 31st minute with a sweet header off a corner kick giving United the 1-0 lead and sending the crowd into a frenzy.

The joy would prove to be short lived.

The goal scored by United seemed to only antagonize the sleeping giant and a mere four minutes later, Damien Duff scored the equalizer on a sick volley at a sharp angle from just outside the 6 yard box. Goalie Nick Ramando never had a chance.

The game headed to halftime knotted at 1-1.

The second half proved to be much less entertaining than the first. Chelsea, having awaken from their early first half slumber, controlled most of action during the second half. United held them at bay until a turnover in the defensive end of the field led to an easy finish by Hernan Crespo.

United provided a flurry of activity during the final 10 minutes but were unable to put in the tying goal and Chelsea walked with a 2-1 victory.

Overall, a somewhat shocking result. Never did I expect United to have a chance against the EPL champs (and really the world champs) but we gave them a good fight for the full 90 minutes. 10, 5, even 3 years ago, no MLS team would have been allowed on the same field as the EPL champs and we hung with them.

Soccer in the US, and more specifically the MLS, still has a long way to go but the game that night allowed us to show off a little of the progress we’ve made.

Can’t wait till the next EPL champs come back next year.

U20s Crash and Burn

Tuesday, June 21st, 2005

For those of you who do not regularly follow the game of soccer, the US men’s under-20 team was just bounced from the World Youth Championships in the Netherlands. Usually this isn’t big news since the US has never been regarded as a soccer power but the future certainly looks bright.

Will we really be the next soccer superpower? Probably not (at least near term) but when ESPN starts running headlines that read “Adu, U.S. under-20s crash out of youth worlds“, the change in tone from indifference to disappointment is obvious.

Roddick Gives Away Match

Friday, May 6th, 2005

So I’m reading my bloglines this morning and come across an article on ESPN.com entitled “Roddick’s sporting gesture ends in defeat“. Andy Roddick, the 5th ranked tennis player in the world, had triple match point at the Rome Masters tournament, when his opponent appeared to hit his second serve just long, double-faulting and giving Roddick the victory. The line judge called the ball out but Roddick actually walked over to look at the mark and confirmed it was in fact an ace, thus overturning the line judge’s call and his own victory. His opponent, Fernando Verdasco, took that opportunity to come back and win that game, that set, and then the third set to win the match.

Although Roddick wasn’t rewarded with a victory for his sportsmanship, it’s still good to see there’s some honesty out there in the world of sports.
